LOS ANGELESJames Handy, the veteran character actor whose credits include Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, has died following a fatal stabbing at his Los Angeles home. He was 81.

Los Angeles Police Department officers found Handy unconscious in the front yard of his Tarzana home at roughly 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. He had sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Police arrested Michael Gledhill, 44, the son of Handy’s girlfriend. Gledhill, who lived at the residence with his mother, was booked on suspicion of murder. His bail has been set at $2 million.

According to an LAPD statement, a 911 caller told dispatchers, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” When officers arrived at the property, Gledhill approached them and stated he was “the one they were looking for.”

Born in New York City, Handy built a decades-long career as a dependable character actor in both film and television. He made his screen debut in the 1977 television series Ryan’s Hope.

Over the following decades, he secured roles in numerous high-profile projects, including Logan, K-911, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, and NCIS: Los Angeles. His most recent film credit was the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
