Overview

Tata Group is India’s largest business conglomerate, with Tata Sons as the holding company and promoter for a broad portfolio of enterprises across industries. As of August 2025, it comprises 29 publicly listed affiliates with a combined market capitalisation of ₹37.84 trillion (US$436 billion).

History

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata began with a trading firm in 1870, built textile mills, and opened the Taj Mahal Hotel in 1903, pursuing a vision centered on steel, power, education, and hospitality. Under Sir Dorabji, TISCO (now Tata Steel) was founded in 1907; the group established Tata Power, opened its first overseas office in London, and supported the Indian Institute of Science (1911). The J. R. D. Tata era (1938–1991) expanded into aviation (Tata Air Services/Air India) and IT (TCS, 1968); subsequent milestones include Tetley (2000), Corus (2007), Jaguar Land Rover (2008), and the 2021 Air India bid with later integration approvals for AirAsia India.
